Fulcrum’s 2:1 Two-to-One Spoke Ratio is a patented wheel-building technology that increases the number of spokes in the most highly stressed sections of a bicycle wheel. By doubling the spokes in critical zones, the system improves efficiency, durability, and stability.
Power Transfer
By placing twice as many spokes where torque is highest, two spokes can share the workload normally carried by one. This improves power transfer from rider to wheel and reduces energy loss under load.
Spoke Tension
The 2:1 layout helps equalize tension between the drive-side and non-drive-side spokes. Balanced tension enhances wheel stability and reduces the tendency for wheels to go out of true.
Fatigue Life
More uniform spoke tension and reduced torsional stress increase the fatigue life of the rim, hub, and spokes. The wheel structure maintains its integrity longer under repeated cycling forces.
Slackening and Torsion Control
Doubling spokes in key areas limits spoke slackening and minimizes torsion, helping the wheel stay responsive and stiff during acceleration and cornering.
Engineering Insight
Fulcrum developed the 2:1 system after extensive daily wheel testing revealed significant differences in the forces acting on each side of a wheel. The front and rear wheels also face different stress profiles:
Front wheels must remain stable under braking loads.
Rear wheels must counteract the high torque applied on the chain side.
By tailoring spoke count to these asymmetric loads, the 2:1 system maximizes performance and reliability.
DT SWISS Champion Spokes
The DT Swiss champion spoke is a classic all rounder for every day use, offering DT's legendary quality and reliability.
Made from X5 stainless steel, containing chrome for rust resistance and nickel for strength. The rolling of the nipple thread removes no metal from the spoke and preserves the grain of the material, maximising strength and greatly reducing the likelihood of failure at the threads, a common issue with lower quality spokes.
